Premdas stands as one of Kerala’s enduring artistic voices, shaped by both instinct and disciplined training. Hailing from Pathanamthitta, his journey spans more than twenty-eight years, carrying the quiet persistence of a self-taught painter who later sought the depth of traditional knowledge. His formal training in mural painting at Vastuvidya Gurukulam, an institution rooted in Kerala’s cultural legacy, added structure to his vision. The meeting of these two paths – personal exploration and classical discipline – continues to define his distinct artistic language.
His body of work is vast. Thousands of paintings, each speaking from a different corner of his creative landscape, reveal the breadth of his curiosity. Themes shift from cultural narratives to contemporary reflections, techniques move between traditional foundations and modern experimentations, and styles stretch across a wide visual spectrum. For many years, he has been a steady participant in Kerala’s artistic movement, presenting his works in more than seventy-eight group exhibitions. His four solo exhibitions have allowed viewers to witness his growth in greater depth, and the upcoming solo show in December 2025 at the Lalithakala Akademi Art Gallery in Thiruvananthapuram promises to mark another defining chapter. His presence has extended beyond national borders as well, with his works featured in three international exhibitions that introduced Kerala’s artistic sensibilities to global audiences.
Alongside his studio practice, Premdas has made meaningful contributions to educational and cultural initiatives in the state. His illustrations for the First Standard Malayalam textbook under SCERT’s Inclusive Education category brought clarity and warmth to young learners. The cover design for the 2025 Sixth Standard Basic Education textbook further demonstrated his precision and commitment to visual storytelling. His collaboration with the Indian Railways, which includes more than twenty paintings for tourism-based visual projects, placed his art in public spaces where thousands encounter it as part of their everyday journey. Through these contributions, he has managed to weave art into both institutional and public environments, broadening its reach and relevance.
Recognition has followed his work with sincerity. The C.N. Karunakaran Memorial State Award in 2020 stands as a significant honour, acknowledging his dedication to the craft. His achievement in the international competition organised by UAE Art and Craft Star Global further expanded the appreciation for his skill across borders. Numerous regional awards highlight the consistency with which he has contributed to Kerala’s art world.
Premdas draws heavily from Kerala’s cultural rhythm. His mural background lends his paintings a sense of structure and symbolic richness, while his contemporary instincts introduce motion, colour, and new interpretive possibilities. His works often carry a narrative tone, shaped by disciplined practice and a continuing desire to learn. Through each creation, he tries to preserve a heritage while letting it evolve, joining tradition with the changing sensitivities of the present.
As he moves forward, exploring new mediums and widening his creative field, Premdas continues to stand rooted in the artistic soil that shaped him. He remains committed to taking Kerala’s visual heritage into modern contexts, opening it to audiences across India and beyond, while nurturing the idea that art grows strongest when it honours its origins and reaches toward new horizons.
